THE SLAYING OF MAHISASURA (a liberal translation from the original text)

As he saw the army being slaughtered, Ciksura, the great asura general went ahead in tremendous fury to battle Ambika. He rained showers of arrow on the Devi just as clouds shower the summit of Mount Meru. But easily shattering those volley of arrows, the Devi, in turn, killed Ciksura's horses and charioteer. Like lightning She slashed through his flag and bow, cutting them in half, and wounded the asura general using swiftly dispatched arrows. With his bow broken, chariot wrecked, horses and charioteer slain the asura now picked up his sword and shield and rushing at the Devi, struck…

Devi Stuti: Symbolism of Madhu and Kaitabh

One of the most beautiful sections of the #Caṇḍī Pāṭha is the stuti to the Devi done by Brahma, so that Vishnu can fight with the Asura-pair named Madhu and Kaitabha.  The names Madhu and Kaitabh most easily remind us of madhu - honey, and a play on the word kITa - insect, a honey-bee.  These insects of the genus Apis are known in commonly for their remarkable single-pointedness in gathering honey and work as a perfect symbol of all such people who are satisfied in their trapping of daily life, going over the mundane routine day in and day…

Siddha Kunjika Stotram

The modern text of the Chandipath that comes to us is an aggregate of various stotras and parts which were added over time, around the core of the 13 main chapters and which are helpful for sadhana. At the very end of the text we have the Siddha Kunjika Stotram which is often regarded as a subtitute for the whole text. Understood in the right context the Kunjika is an integral part of Chandipath, but it does not replace the necessity of the main text, for each section of the Chandipath has its own power and utlity and taken together…

Jagannatha svami nayana-patha-gami bhavatu me

Jagannath is the Lord of the Kali Yuga - the form Lord Visnu takes to govern the last of the four Yugas in popular conception. But there is a mystery associated with true identity of Jagannath which has intrigued scholars for a long time. Some have speculated that the temple was originally a Baudha temple with triple figure of Jagannatha, Balarama and Subhadra being representative of the triranta of Buddhism - Buddha, Dharma and Sangha. Additionally in many Pali texts Buddha is often referred to as Jagannatha and given that influence of Asoka in the Kalinga region was historically important,…

When Ramakrishna Became Kalpataru

January 1, 1886, was "an event of unusual consequence and meaning" in the life of Sri Ramakrishna and his followers. Ramakrishna was suffering from throat cancer at that time, and his health was declining. It was a relatively good day for him, and he took a walk in the garden. And something strange happened. He entered as estatic trance like state, which was not uncommon, but, and this is rare, allowed the people around to touch him. Most Yogis when they reach a particularly advanced state of consciousness would not allow random people to touch their body. This serves a…

The Power of Kamakhya

In 1337 Muhammd Shah send 1,00,000 horsemen well equipped to Assam, but the whole Army perished in the land of witchcraft and not a trace of it was left. - A History of Assam by E.A.Gait, quoting Tabaqat-i-Nasiri. For long Assam and the kāmākhyā pitha has been known to outsiders as the place for 'black magic.' However, black or white is just a matter of perspective. Fire can burn, but it can also be used for cooking - it is the same Shakti but used for different purposes. The only 'black magic' in the world lies hidden inside the darkness…

Ambubachi: The Greatest Celebration of Shakti

From today starts the Ambubachi mela in Nilachal Parvat (blue mountain) of kāmākhyā, Kamrupa. Just like the Kumbha Mela is the great Hindu religious congregation open for all, Ambubachi is regarded as the biggest religious festival for those who have taken to the path of Tantra sadhana. Kamakhya is one of the 4 greatest śakti pīṭha-s in the Indian subcontient of ancient times. By some accounts this is the place where vāmācāra sadhana orginated, not only for Hindus but for many streams of Tibetan Buddhism. Every single śakti pīṭha is linked to a body part of śakti, kāmākhyā is linked…

Prachanda Chandika: She Who Cuts off Her Own Head

Chinnamastā is one of the most feared Mahavidya-s in the KaliKula tradition. She is shown having cut off her own head, and allowing two of her companions to drink from the jet stream that flows from her throat. Chinnamasta sadhanas started during the 4th century in India and slowly passed onto Mahayana Buddhism in the form of Vajrayogini. Her stunningly ferocious imagery naturally invokes fear and trepidation, matched only by the effects that her sadhana can cause to a seeker. In Tibetan Buddhism theogony, she is also referred to as Chinnamunda, who, some scholars believe is a form of Vajravarahi.…

Durga Kavacha

In the worldview of the Tantra sadhaka the whole world consists of Shakti, every material and every moment has its own unique Shakti. A good knowledge of this allows the seeker to use different and exact materials, gathered at specific times using the knowledge of Tantric jyotisha, and combined by the application of powerful mantra-s to cause some effect that is universally visible to all. When an Amavashya (new moon) coincides with a Tuesday, such a combination is extremely potent for creation of a kavacha with the power of Devi Durga. A kavacha is like as astral armour that protects…

Bhuvaneshwari

While many Vedantic schools have fought over the ontological and philosophical status of Maya, in Shakta worldview Maya is the creative power of the Supreme. It is by acts of exclusive concentration that the Supreme is able to create a world of apparent divergence on the substratum of the Brahman. The gods are different from each other, just as there is difference in species, countries, men and women, even a grain of dust maybe different from another grain. Each individual feels himself different from everything else in the world. This unique sense of differentiation and individualization is the creative power…
